Mathematical Methods and System Implementation of the mobile communication networks optimization

1. Motivation

As the fast increase of the TD-SCDMA wireless network capacity and the number of clients, China Mobile has entered the new era of multi-management of GSM/TD-SCDMA. In this condition, the key problem arises, that is, how to merge these two wireless networks into one, including their coverage, traffic and capacity, while benefiting from their own strength. The two networks complement each other in network and service. Thus, it is necessary to design TD-SCDMA network according to the distribution of the traffic and the network’s quality, extracted from the maps of GSM coverage map and traffic map.

The number of clients in wireless network is huge and ever increasing, which results in highly complicated and highly demanding network optimization work. To obtain results of high quality, it is sorely needed for the engineers to handle the whole wireless network distinctly, including the coverage and the traffic. Take Guangzhou for example. Now there are 4777 base stations, 11088 cells and more than 70000 channels operated by Guangzhou Mobile. The peak traffic reaches 300000 ERLs. This dense distribution of stations and traffic makes the whole work more difficult, including the optimization of the coverage, the planning of the base stations and the capacity.

As the increment of the operators’ incomes is now facing a bottleneck, the profits come from savings more and more. More efficient tools are needed. There is a long way for Chinese operators to go, compared to the operators in developed countries. However, the change is around the corner.

The destination in this field is to obtain a design pattern for the merging of two different wireless networks, which should contribute to the efficiency and accuracy of network design, saving costs at the same time.

2. Effect of achievement in economics and society

(1) Analysis of economic effect

By traditional work of base station planning, there needs one experienced engineer to work at least 2 days when the boundary of each base station is to be optimized, but there only needs 2 hours using our system. That is to say, the system can save about 3 million Yuan inhuman capital if the calculation is done based on optimizations of 300 base station by the company every year, which have excellent profit. Otherwise, the base stations planned by this system cover more accurately and the traffic absorption is more effective, consequently, the service ability of the base stations are gotten improved. And in the long run, it is also helpful to decrease the configurations of base stations, which will retrench investments of mobile operators.

(2) Analysis of social effect

  1. The planning method of the integration of GSM and TD-SCDMA—it is the first time to come out with the joint planning of GSM and TD-SCDMA in industry. Analysis of the distribution of GSM subscribers can be used to give an guidance to plan, construct and optimize TD-SCDMA network, so as to have complementary advantages of dual networks, thus to provide subscribers with more stable network services and more colorful service selections.
  2. high-precision planning method—using optimization theory to take multi-layers-net joint planning and optimization makes the match of network sources and business requirements become optimal, so as to make the distributions of base stations become more scientific and more reasonable, and to raise the utilization of the facilities , reduce energy consumption and carbon emission, thus to implement green network.
  3. Smart positioning technology effectively improves the working efficiency of base station planning, which may save human capital in base station planning heavily and relieve the contradiction of human resources.
  4. The adaptive propagation model is the initiate of home(China), which fills up the technique blank of the country in wireless communication domain. It can be widely applied in the planning and optimization of the wireless communication networks for improving the respective quality of service.
